Are you following the UltraCane yet? If not, then why not follow now and read the great articles that are being published about the UltraCane:
This is a wonderful set of articles about children and mobility/orientation. Great read for those who have children or teenagers who are blind or visually impaired: https://www.wonderbaby.org/orientation-and-mobility/page/2
Getting back out in your local area following COVID-19 Pandemic
We know that many blind and visually impaired people are concerned about social distancing once the lockdown is eased during the next phase. We may be allowed outdoors, but social distancing will still be in place. So please remember that your UltraCane starts detecting at 2 metres ahead of you and warns you that you are approaching something. Your mobility and orientation training through sound cues and directional hearing will give an indication of whether it is people ahead or around you. Maintaining straight line travel is also useful. These cues are useful in helping you to continue social distancing whilst walking outdoors with your UltraCane.
Touch is important to blind and visually impaired people and so don't be afraid to continue to wear gloves if you know you will be touching doors, handles, rails etc. Remember to wash your hands when you can if you are not wearing gloves or use hand sanitiser, carry it in your pocket.
And don't forget, if you feel your UltraCane might need a service, then just contact us and we will service it for free. We want you to remain empowered and confident during your travels. Above all else, "STAY SAFE".
From all at UltraCane.
GET INSPIRED - You know, we weren't the only ones inspired by nature; because of course, the UltraCane was designed using ultrasound in exactly the same way as bats use it to fly in the dark. Did you know for instance that inventor George de Mestral returned from a walk and noticed burrs all over his dog’s fur. Looking closer, he discovered hook-like shapes on the burrs. This inspired him to invent the VELCRO® hook and loop system. Or that Porcupine quills inspired the invention of less painful hypodermic needles that penetrate the skin easily. Take a look at the attached Biomimicry leaflet and join the challenge. Look to nature for inspiration, design a new invention and share on social media. Anyone who wants a text only version of the leaflet, please just email us and we will send you one. Email: [email protected]

An interesting article written by Claire Lebreton, a French journalist about the UltraCane. Here is part of the story in English. You can read the full version online by following the link provided http://www.leparisien.fr/espace-premium/paris-75/ils-ont-teste-une-canne-blanche-a-ultrasons-17-01-2015-4453449.php
"No need to tap to identify obstacles. Yesterday, at the town hall of the ninth, forty people experienced a brand new white stick called, the Ultracane. The test, organized by (EPC), an offshoot of the Lions Club, was intended to provide insight of the possibilities offered by this tool.
The cane is equipped with radar located near the hand. One points down, the other horizontal. They detect obstacles up to 4 m and emit vibrations greater or lesser depending on the height and distance of the found objects. "This cane is a real plus for the blind," said Gilles Fiszenson, a member of EPC. "It is very easy to use," adds Jean-Claude Chassain, one of the participants test.

Miracles of Nature - BBC1 - Monday 12th November 2012 at 9pm presented by Richard Hammond
Richard Hammond reveals secret animal abilities from the natural world and discovers how those same animals have inspired a series of unlikely human inventions at the very frontier of science. Programme 2 in the series looks at 'Super Senses' including how bats use ultrasound to detect pray and obstacles in their path and how this very same method is now being used in the UltraCane so that blind and visually impaired people can locate obstacles in their path and at head height, allowing them to travel more safely and confidently.
